Box 22542 (39225) Jackson, Mississippi FAX: (601) 359-1370 # ***FIRE SAFETY BULLETIN*** August 31, 1993 The State Fire Marshal's Office requests the assistance of School Superintendents, Principals and Staff with the following fire safety items as required by the Mississippi Fire Prevention Code, Section 45-11-101, MS Code 1972, Annotated. Each year our office receives a number of complaints from across the state concerning unsafe conditions existing in school buildings. This concerns the improper locking of exit doors with chains and padlocks. 1. EXIT DOORS: All exit doors are to be unlocked and ready for immediate use in case of fire or other emergencies while buildings are occupied. 2. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: All fire extinguishers are to be inspected annually to ensure proper operation. 3. EMERGENCY LIGHTING: Battery-operated emergency light units for gymnasiums, auditoriums and other facilities are to be inspected annually to ensure proper operation. Box 1420 Corinth, MS 38834 Dear Mr. Wamsley: It's time for the 1993-94 school year to begin and as many of you know, prior to entering political office, I served 10 1/2 years as a coach, teacher and administrator in the public schools of our State. The State Fire Marshal's Office is responsible for the enforcement of the Mississippi Fire Prevention Code. Safety standards for county schools are specified by this Code. As State Fire Marshal, I am requesting the assistance of all school administrators to work with our office to ensure a safe environment for this school year. Enclosed is a safety bulletin addressing some fire safety requirements specified in the Mississippi Fire Prevention Code. Please review the safety bulletin as it relates to your facility. I would like to offer my office and staff to assist you in promoting fire safety in your school. Members of my staff are available at your request to help with fire safety inspections or recommendations at your facility.
