GRADDICK ATTORNEY GENERAL STATE OF ALABAMA ApR 11;79 APR 1 1 1979 ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING 54 NORTH UNION STREET MONTGOMERY. ALMA MA 55150 AREA 1205I. 534.5550 OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL 4C--n " ^ Cr_ 000 '73 Honorable Seth Hammett P. O. Box 1418 Andalusia, Alabama 36420 Nursing Board - licenses - Regulations Alabama Board of Nursing is authorized to regulate duties of Licensed Practical Nurses. Dear Sir: 'ibis will acknowledge your recent letter requesting opinion as to whether Licensed Practical Nurses are subject to regulation by the Alabama. Board of Nursing. My answer is in the affirmative. Code of Alabama 1975 § 34-21-2(1) and (18) provides for such regulation by the Board of Nursing. Formerly, only Registered Nurses (RN's) were permitted to administer flpir3q intravenously and this was due to their specialized training. Such training was not part of the LPN course, Actually, this regulation attached to your request will give LPN's authorization to administer fluids intravenously when they receive the specialized training and are approved by the Board. Otherwise LPN's would be violating the nursing law if they do these acts. Sincerely, CHARLES A. GRADDICK ATTORNEY GENERAL BY: DAVID W. ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL 17eIC/dn
