Act No. 2012-389 - motor vehicle accident prevention course EFFECTIVE: Immediate Existing Alabama law [Ala. Code § 27-13-270] requires insurers offering private passenger automobile and physical damage insurance to provide a premium reduction if the principal operator is 55 years of age or older and has successfully completed a motor vehicle accident prevention course approved in accordance with Ala. Code § 27-13-271. Insurers are advised that Ala. Act No. 2012-389, effective August 1, 2012, has amended § 27-13-271 in the following non-technical respects: 1. The minimum number of instructional hours for an approved course has been reduced to six (6) hours. 2. A course may be offered online (subject to the minimum number of instructional hours and other requirements in the statute). 3. The statutory reference to "American Association of Retired Persons" has been changed to "AARP" to be consistent with that organization's name change some years ago.
