(a) General Examination. Each applicant for a crane operator's license shall, and each applicant for a renewal license may, be required to take a general written examination designed to test the applicant's knowledge of generally accepted safety standards. (b) Operating Examination. Each applicant who receives a passing score on the general examination shall also be required to successfully complete an operating examination designed to test his or her competence in the safe operation of a crane by performing certain tasks such as raising and lowering a load, raising and lowering the boom, swinging the crane with a suspended load, braking, and understanding hand signals.
