10.2.3.3 – Certified Nurse-Midwives (Rev. 10800; Issued: 05-20-21; Effective: 06-22-21; Implementation: 06-22-21) Federal regulations at 42 CFR § 410.77 list the Medicare qualifications for certified nurse- midwives (CNMs). These qualifications require that a CNM: • Be a registered nurse who is legally authorized to practice as a nurse- midwife in the state where services are performed; • Have successfully completed a program of study and clinical experience for nurse-midwives that is accredited by an accrediting body approved by the U.S. Department of Education; and • Be certified as a nurse-midwife by the American College of Nurse- Midwives or the American Midwifery Certification Board.
