SEC. 1235. ANALYSIS OF REQUIRED FORCE LEVELS AND TYPES OF FORCES NEEDED TO SECURE SOUTHERN AND EASTERN REGIONS OF AFGHANISTAN.(a) Study Required.—The Secretary of Defense may, in support of the Commander of United States Forces for Afghanistan (USFOR-A), enter into a contract with a Federally Funded Research Development Center (FFRDC) to provide an analysis of the required force levels and types of forces needed to implement the Commander’s strategic objectives in Afghanistan, including securing the southern and eastern regions of Afghanistan in order to provide a space for the Government of Afghanistan to establish effective government control and provide the Afghan security forces with the required training and mentoring.(b) Funding.—From funds made available for the Department of Defense by section 301(5) for operation and maintenance, Defense-wide activities, $3,000,000 may be used to carry out subsection (a).
