SEC. 10404. DEMONSTRATION PROJECT. (a) Number of Projects.—In order to determine whether, and if so, the extent to which, the use of volunteer senior aides to provide basic medical assistance and support to families with moderately or severely disabled or chronically ill children contributes to reducing the costs of care for such children, not more than 10 communities may conduct demonstration projects under this section. (b) Duties of the Secretary.— (1) Consideration of applications.— The Secretary of Health and Human Services (in this section referred to as the “Secretary”) shall consider all applications received from communities desiring to conduct demonstration projects under this section. (2) Approval of certain applications.—The Secretary shall approve not more than 10 applications to conduct projects which appear likely to contribute significantly to the achievement of the purpose of this section. (3) Grants.—The Secretary shall make grants to each community the application of which to conduct a demonstration project under this section is approved by the Secretary to assist the community in carrying out the project. 103 STAT. 2489 (c) Requirements.—Each community receiving a grant with respect to a demonstration project under this section shall conduct the project in accordance with such requirements as the Secretary may prescribe. (d) Limitation on Authorization of Appropriations.—For grants under this section, there are authorized to be appropriated to the Secretary of Health and Human Services not to exceed— (1) $1,000,000 for each of the fiscal years 1990 and 1991; and (2) $2,000,000 for each of the fiscal years 1992, 1993, and 1994. (e) Effective Date.—This section shall take effect on October 1, 1989.
