SEC. 523. REQUIRED LENGTH OF COMMISSIONED SERVICE FOR VOLUNTARY RETIREMENT AS AN OFFICER (a) Army.— Section 3911 of title 10, United States Code, is amended— (1) by inserting “(a)” at the beginning of the text of the section; and (2) by adding at the end the following: “(b) The Secretary of Defense may authorize the Secretary of the Army, during the five-year period beginning on October 1, 1990, to reduce the requirement under subsection (a) for at least 10 years of active service as a commissioned officer to a period (determined by the Secretary of the Army) of not less than eight years.”. (b) Navy and Marine Corps.— Section 6323(a) of such title is amended— (1) by inserting “(1)” after “(a)”; and (2) by adding at the end the following: “(2) The Secretary of Defense may authorize the Secretary of the Navy, during the five-year period beginning on October 1, 1990, to reduce the requirement under paragraph (1) for at least 10 years of active service as a commissioned officer to a period (determined by the Secretary) of not less than eight years.”. (c) Air Force.— Section 8911 of such title is amended— (1) by inserting “(a)” at the beginning of the text of the section; and (2) by adding at the end the following: “(b) The Secretary of Defense may authorize the Secretary of the Air Force, during the five-year period beginning on October 1, 1990, to reduce the requirement under subsection (a) for at least 10 years of active service as a commissioned officer to a period (determined by the Secretary of the Air Force) of not less than eight years.”.
