§ 3039. Inspector General; Provost Marshal General (a) There is an Inspector General in the Army. When directed by the Secretary of the Army or the Chief of Staff, the Inspector General shall inquire into and report upon the discipline, efficiency, and economy of the Army, and snail perform any other duties prescribed by the Secretary, by the Chief of Staff, or by law. 165 (b) There is a Provost Marshal General in the Army. The Provost Marshal General shall perform the duties prescribed by the Secretary, by the Chief of Staff, or by law. (c) The position of Inspector General and that of Provost Marshal General shall each be filled by the detail of a general officer of the Army for a tour of duty of not more than four years. However, the Secretary may extend such a tour of duty if he makes a special finding that the extension is necessary in the public interest.
