§ 5578. Regular Navy: Dental Corps (a) Original appointments to the active list of the Navy in the Dental Corps may be made from persons who— (1) are at least 21 and under 32 years of age; (2) are graduates of accredited medical or dental schools and are trained in the several branches of dentistry; and (3) have passed physical, mental, moral, and professional examinations before boards convened by the Secretary of the Navy and have been recommended for appointment by those boards. Appointments under this subsection shall be in the grade of lieutenant (junior grade). (b) Under regulations prescribed by the Secretary, original appointments to the active list of the Navy in the Dental Corps may also be made, as the needs of the service require, from civilian dentists who 323 have such qualifications as the Secretary prescribes. Appointments under this subsection may be in the grades of lieutenant (junior grade) through captain.
