SEC. 2808. INCREASE IN THE AMOUNT OF SPACE FOR MILITARY FAMILY HOUSING UNITS UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. (a) Increase Authorized for Harsh Climates.—Section 2826 of title 10, United States Code, is amended— 105 STAT. 1541 (1) by redesignating subsections (d), (e), and (f) as subsections (f), (g), and (h), respectively; and (2) by inserting after subsection (c) the following new subsection: “(d) The applicable maximum net floor area prescribed by subsection (a) may be increased by 300 square feet for a family housing unit in a location where harsh climatological conditions severely restrict outdoor activity for a significant part of each year, as determined by the Secretary concerned pursuant to regulations prescribed by the Secretary of Defense. The regulations shall apply uniformly to the armed forces.”. (b) Increase Authorized Where Purchase of Larger Units is Cost Effective.—Such section is further amended by inserting after subsection (d), as added by subsection (a)(2), the following new subsection: “(e) In the case of the acquisition by purchase of military family housing units for members of the armed forces in pay grades below pay grade O–6, the applicable maximum net floor area prescribed by subsection (a) may be increased by 20 percent if the Secretary concerned determines that the purchase of larger units is cost effective when compared to available units within the space limitations specified in that subsection. The authority provided by this subsection shall expire on September 30, 1994.”.
