(a) (1) The first section of the Act of May 26, 1949, as amended (22 U.S.C. 2652), is amended to read as follows: “That there shill] be in the Department of State, in addition to the Secretary of State, a Deputy Secretary of State, an Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, an Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, a Deputy Under Secretary of State, and eleven Assistant Secretaries of State.” (2) Section 2(b) of the Act of May 26, 1949, as amended (22 U.S.C. 2652), is repealed. (b) The duties of the Under Secretary of State are transferred to the Deputy Secretary of State. The individual holding, on the date of enactment of this Act, the office of the Under Secretary of State may assume the duties of the Deputy Secretary of State. The individual assuming such duties shall not be required to be reappointed by reason of the enactment of this section. (c) The provisions of subsection (a) of this section are effective July 1, 1972.
