Sec. 403. (a) The Secretary of the Interior, in cooperation with the Secretary of the Army, shall cause to be conducted such studies as they deem reasonable and necessary to determine the causes and extent of the damage to the foundations of the historic structures of the San Juan National Historic Site and shall transmit to the Congress, as soon as possible, but no later than one year after the date of the enactment of this Act, the alternative courses of action, together with their recommendations, which might be taken to assure the historical integrity of such structures and the safety of the visiting public. Pending the submission of such recommendations, the Secretary of the Interior shall take every reasonable precaution to assure the public safety and the maximum public enjoyment of the historic site. (b) To carry out the purposes of this section, there are authorized to be appropriated such sums as may be necessary, but not more than $100,000.
