SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR THE TEACHERS OF INDIAN CHILDREN.
SEC. 5322. SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR THE TEACHERS OF INDIAN CHILDREN. (a) In General.— (1) The Secretary is authorized to make grants to, and enter into contracts with, institutions of higher education, Indian organizations, and Indian tribes for the purpose of— (A) preparing individuals for teaching or administering special programs and projects designed to meet the special educational needs of Indian people, and (B) providing in-service training for persons teaching in such programs. (2) Priority shall be given in the awarding of grants, and in the entering into of contracts, under subsection (a) to Indian institutions and organizations. 102 STAT. 407 (b) Fellowships and Traineeships.— (1) In carrying out the provisions of this section, the Secretary is authorized to award fellowships and traineeships to individuals and to make grants to, and to enter into contracts with, institutions of higher education, Indian organizations, and Indian tribes for the costs of education allowances. (2) In awarding fellowships and traineeships under this subsection, the Secretary shall give preference to Indians. (3) In the case of traineeships and fellowships, the Secretary is authorized to grant stipends to, and allowances for dependents of, persons receiving traineeships and fellowships. (c) Authorization of Appropriations—There are authorized to be appropriated for each fiscal year ending prior to October 1, 1993, such sums as may be necessary to carry out the provisions of this section.
