SEC. 218. SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETIC ENERGY STORAGE (SMES) PROGRAM. (a) Program Office.—The Secretary of Defense shall establish within the Department of the Navy a program office to facilitate research and design studies leading to possible construction of Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) test models. (b) Funding.—Immediately upon enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall transfer from the Defense Nuclear Agency to the Department of the Navy any funds appropriated for fiscal years before fiscal year 1994 that were designated for the Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage Project that remain available for obligation. Those funds snail be obligated for (1) continued work for experiments and studies described in section 218(b)(4) of the National Defense Authorization Act of 1993 (Public Law 102–484; 106 Stat. 2353), and (2) study of alternative SMES designs. (c) Coordination With Department of Energy.—Research work of the Department of the Navy described in subsection (a) shall be coordinated with emerging Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage research being carried out within the Department of Energy. (d) Deadline.—The office referred to in subsection (a) shall be created and staffed not later than 30 days after the date of the enactment of this Act.
