SEC. 402. TEMPORARY VARIATION IN DOPMA AUTHORIZED END STRENGTH LIMITATIONS FOR ACTIVE DUTY AIR FORCE AND NAVY OFFICERS IN CERTAIN GRADES. (a) Air Force Officers.— In the administration of the limitation under section 523(a)(1) of title 10, United States Code, for fiscal years 1996 and 1997, the numbers applicable to officers of the Air Force serving on active duty in the grades of major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel shall be the numbers set forth for that fiscal year in the following table (rather than the numbers determined in accordance with the table in that section): Fiscal year: Number of officers who may be serving on active duty in the grade of: Major Lieutenant colonel Colonel 1996 15,566 9,876 3,609 1997 15,645 9,913 3,627 (b) Navy Officers.— In the administration of the limitation under section 523(a)(2) of title 10, United States Code, for fiscal years 1996 and 1997, the numbers applicable to officers of the Navy serving on active duty in the grades of lieutenant commander, commander, and captain shall be the numbers set forth for that fiscal year in the following table (rather than the numbers determined in accordance with the table in that section): Fiscal year: Number of officers who may be serving on active duty in the grade of: Lieutenant commander Commander Captain 1996 11,924 7,390 3,234 1997 11,732 7,297 3,188
