MULTITECHNOLOGY AUTOMATED READER CARD DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM.
SEC. 393. MULTITECHNOLOGY AUTOMATED READER CARD DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM. (a) Program Required.—The Secretary of the Navy shall carry out a program to demonstrate expanded use of multitechnology automated reader cards throughout the Navy and the Marine Corps. The demonstration program shall include demonstration of the use of the so-called “smartship” technology of the ship-to-shore work load/off load program of the Navy. (b) Period of Program.—The Secretary shall carry out the demonstration program for two years beginning not later than January 1, 1998. (c) Report.—Not later than 90 days after termination of the demonstration program, the Secretary shall submit to Congress a report on the results of the program. (d) Funding.—Of the amount authorized to be appropriated pursuant to section 301(2) for operation and maintenance for the Navy, $36,000,000 shall be available for the demonstration program under this section, of which $6,300,000 shall be available for demonstration of the use of the so-called “smartship” technology of the ship-to-shore work load/off load program of the Navy.
