SEC. 577. AUTHORITY FOR SPECIAL COURTS-MARTIAL TO IMPOSE SENTENCES TO CONFINEMENT AND FORFEITURES OF PAY OF UP TO ONE YEAR. (a) Maximum Punishments That May Be Adjudged by a Special Court-Martial.—Section 819 of title 10, United States Code (article 19 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice), is amended— (1) in the second sentence, by striking “six months” both places it appears and inserting “one year”; and (2) in the third sentence, by inserting after “A bad conduct discharge” the following: “, confinement for more than six months, or forfeiture of pay for more than six months”. (b) Effective Date.—The amendments made by subsection (a) shall take effect on the first day of the sixth month beginning after the date of the enactment of this Act and shall apply with respect to charges referred on or after that effective date to trial by special courts-martial.
