SEC. 712. ARMED FORCES HEALTH PROFESSIONS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (a) Critically Needed Wartime Skills Residency Requirement Permitted.—Section 2122 of title 10, United States Code, is amended— (1) by inserting “(a)” before “To be eligible”; and (2) by adding at the end the following new subsection: “(b) The Secretary of Defense may require, as part of the agreement under subsection (a)(2), that a person must agree to accept, if offered, residency training in a health profession skill which has been designated by the Secretary as a critically needed wartime skill.” (b) 2,500 Scholarships Targeted for Critically Needed Wartime Skills.— (1) In General.—Section 2124 of title 10, United States Code, is amended by striking out “except that” and all that follows through the end of the section and inserting in lieu thereof the following: “except that— “(1) the total number of persons so designated in all of the programs authorized by this subchapter shall not, at any time, exceed 6,000; and “(2) of the total number of persons so designated, at least 2,500 shall be persons— “(A) who are in the final two years of their course of study; and “(B) who have agreed to accept, if offered, residency training in a health profession skill which has been designated by the Secretary as a critically needed wartime skill.”. (2) Effective Date.—The amendment made by paragraph (1) shall take effect on October 1, 1989.
