EXCESS SHELTER EXPENSE.
SEC. 806. EXCESS SHELTER EXPENSE. (a) Revision of Deduction.— The proviso to the fourth sentence of section 5(e) of the Food Stamp Act of 1977 (7 U.S.C. 2014(e)) is amended by striking out “That the amount of such” and all that follows through the end of the sentence and inserting in lieu thereof the following: “That the amount of such excess shelter expense deduction shall not exceed $164 a month in the forty-eight contiguous States and the District of Columbia, and shall not exceed, in Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and the Virgin Islands of the United States $285, $234, $199, and $121 a month, respectively, adjusted on October 1, 1988, and on each October 1 thereafter, to the nearest lower dollar increment to reflect changes in the shelter, fuel, and utilities components of housing costs in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as appropriately adjusted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics after consultation with the Secretary, for the twelve months ending the preceding June 30.”. (b) Effective Date and Application.— (1) The amendment made by this section shall become effective on October 1, 1987. (2) The amendment made by this section shall not apply with respect to an allotment issued under the Food Stamp Act of 1977 to a household for a certification period beginning before October 1, 1987.
