ORGANIC AGRICULTURE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION INITIATIVE.

SEC. 7206. ORGANIC AGRICULTURE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION INITIATIVE.(a) In General.—Section 1672B of the Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act of 1990 (7 U.S.C. 5925b) (commonly known as the “Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative”) is amended—(1) in subsection (a)—(A) in paragraph (5), by striking “and” after the semicolon;(B) in paragraph (6), by striking the period at the end and inserting a semicolon; and(C) by adding at the end the following:“(7) examining optimal conservation and environmental outcomes relating to organically produced agricultural products; and“(8) developing new and improved seed varieties that are particularly suited for organic agriculture.”; and(2) by adding at the end the following:“(f) Funding.—“(1) In general.—Of the funds of the Commodity Credit Corporation, the Secretary shall make available to carry out this section—“(A) $18,000,000 for fiscal year 2009; and“(B) $20,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2010 through 2012.122 STAT. 1239“(2) Additional funding.—In addition to amounts made available under paragraph (1), there is authorized to be appropriated to carry out this section $25,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2009 through 2012.”.(b) Coordination.—In carrying out the amendment made by this section, the Secretary shall ensure that the Division Chief of the applicable Research, Education, and Extension Office established under section 251 of the Department of Agriculture Reorganization Act of 1994 (7 U.S.C. 6971) coordinates projects and activities under this section to ensure, to the maximum extent practicable, that unnecessary duplication of effort is eliminated or minimized.
