Emergency Transportation Services: Procedural Requirements

01. Services Subject to Review. Ambulance service review is governed by provisions of the Transportation Policies and Procedures Manual as amended. (7-1-26) 02. Non-Emergency Transport PA Required. If an emergency does not exist, prior written authorization to transport by ambulance must be secured from the Department. The provider must provide justification to the Department that any other mode of travel would, by reasonable medical judgment of the Department, result in death, serious impairment of a bodily function or major organ, or serious jeopardy to the overall health of the participant. (7-1-26) 03. Air Ambulance. Air ambulance services must be approved in advance by the Department, except in emergency situations. Emergency air ambulance services will be authorized by the Department on a retrospective basis. (7-1-26)
