Section 205.1400Â Details and Finishes
a)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Corridors
and Exits
1)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Minimum public corridor width shall be 5'0", except that
corridors and aisles where patients are transported in stretchers or carts
shall be 8'00" within the physical boundaries of the facility.
2)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The facility or, if the ASTC is within a medical office
building, the section shall have at least two exits that are remote from each
other.
3)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Items such as drinking fountains, telephone booths, vending
machines, and portable equipment shall be located so as not to restrict
corridor traffic or reduce the corridor width below the required minimum.
b)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Doors
1)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â All doors to toilets that may be used by patients shall be
equipped with hardware that will permit access in an emergency.
2)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The minimum width of doors for patient access to examination
and treatment rooms shall be 3'0".
3)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The minimum width of doors to rooms needing access for
stretchers (e.g., procedure rooms, recovery) shall be 3'8".
4)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Doors on all openings between corridors and rooms or spaces
subject to occupancy, except elevator doors, shall be swing type.
c)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Doors, sidelights, borrowed lights, and windows in which the
glazing extends down to within 18" above the floor (creating the possibility
of accidental breakage by pedestrian traffic) shall be glazed with safety
glass, wire glass, or plastic glazing material that will resist breaking and
will not create dangerous cutting edges when broken, in accordance with the
Safety Glazing Materials Act. Similar materials shall be used in wall openings
unless required otherwise for fire safety.
d)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Thresholds and expansion joint covers shall be made flush with
the floor surface to facilitate use of wheelchairs and carts.
e)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Paper towel dispensers and waste receptacles shall be provided
at all hand-washing fixtures.
f)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Labeled fire doors, when required, shall be certified by an
independent testing laboratory as meeting the construction requirements equal
to those for fire doors in NFPA 80. Reference to a labeled fire door shall be
construed to include labeled frame and hardware.
g)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Radiation protection requirements of X-ray and gamma-ray
installations shall conform to the requirements of the Illinois Emergency
Management Agency's rules titled General Provisions for Radiation Protection (32
Ill. Adm. Code 310), Standards for Protection Against Radiation (32 Ill. Adm.
Code 340) and Use of X-rays in the Healing Arts Including Medical, Dental,
Podiatry, and Veterinary Medicine (32 Ill. Adm. Code 360). Provisions shall be
made for testing and completed installation before use, and all defects shall
be corrected before use.
h)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The
minimum ceiling height shall be 8'0" with the following exceptions:
1)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Boiler rooms, if provided, shall have ceiling clearance not
less than 2'0" above the main boiler header and connecting piping.
2)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Radiographic and other rooms containing ceiling-mounted equipment
and including those with ceiling-mounted surgical light fixtures shall have
height required to accommodate the equipment and fixture.
3)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Ceilings in corridors, storage rooms, toilet rooms, and other
minor rooms may be not less than 7'8".
4)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Suspended tracks, rails, and pipes located in the path of
normal traffic shall be not less than 6'8" above the floor.
i)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Flammable
anesthetics are prohibited.
j)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Cubicle curtains and draperies shall be noncombustible or
rendered flame retardant and shall pass both the large- and small-scale tests
of NFPA 701.
k)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Floor materials shall be easily cleanable and have wear
resistance appropriate for the location involved.
1)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â In all areas frequently subject to wet cleaning methods, floor
materials shall not be physically affected by germicidal and cleaning
solutions.
2)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Floors
that are subject to traffic while wet shall have a nonslip surface.
l)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Wall finishes shall be washable and, in the immediate area of
plumbing fixtures, shall be smooth and moisture resistant.
m)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Floor and wall penetrations by pipes, ducts, and conduits shall
be tightly sealed to minimize entry of rodents and insects. Joints of
structural elements shall be similarly sealed.
n)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Ceiling
Finishes
1)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Ceilings shall be cleanable and those in sensitive areas such
as surgical rooms shall be readily washable and without crevices that can
retain dirt particles. These sensitive areas shall have a finished ceiling,
covering all overhead ductwork and piping.
2)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Finished ceilings may be omitted in mechanical and equipment
spaces, shops, general storage areas, and similar spaces, unless required for
fire-resistive purposes.
3)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Acoustical ceilings are recommended in corridors, multipurpose
rooms, and waiting areas.
