Cite as Ind. Admin. Code tit. 410, r. 5-4-1
Sec. 1. (a) 410 IAC 5-4-1 establishes standards for protection against radiation hazards. Except as otherwise specifically
provided, 410 IAC 5-4 applies to all licensees or registrants. It is the purpose of 410 IAC 5-4 to control the possession,
use, and transfer of sources of radiation by any licensee or registrant in such a manner that the total dose to an individual does not exceed the
standards of radiation protection prescribed in 410 IAC 5-4. Nothing in 410 IAC 5-4 shall be interpreted as limiting the
intentional exposure of patients to radiation for the purpose of medical diagnosis or therapy.
(b) In addition to complying with the rules set forth in 410 IAC 5-4, every reasonable effort should be made to maintain
radiation exposures, and releases of radioactive materials in effluents to unrestricted areas, as low as is reasonably achievable. The term "as low as
is reasonably achievable" means as low as is reasonably achievable taking into account the state of technology, and the economics of improvements
in relation to benefits to the public health and safety, and other societal and socio-economic considerations, and in relation to the utilization of
ionizing radiation in the public interest.
