Re: Important Update: Renewal of Producer Licenses
The Maryland Insurance Administration ("MIA") is in the process of migrating our data and producer licensing services into a new system. The selected system is the NAIC's State Based Systems ("SBS") which provides a comprehensive, web-based application for use by state regulators in support of all insurance regulatory functions.
Until SBS is implemented, producers may submit a new application or a renewal application to the MIA in one of two ways: (1) submit a paper copy of the Uniform Initial or Renewal Application with the applicable fee directly to the MIA via mail; or (2) submit an on-line application via the National Insurance Producer Registry ("NIPR") available on NIPR's website, www.nipr.com. If a producer submits a renewal application at least two calendar weeks before his/her license expires, the license does not expire until the MIA takes final action.
Please note that it takes the MIA 10 to 14 business days to enter a paper application into our licensing system. The MIA can only confirm that a paper application has been received once it has been entered into our licensing system.
In the interim between approval of the license application and before the hard copy of the license has been mailed to the producer, insurers and other interested parties may want a copy of the producer's license. During this time period, the MIA requests that insurers and other interested parties accept a demographic screen print from our licensing system that shows the approval of the renewal application. The MIA's demographic screen print can be faxed and may be requested by contacting our customer service unit at 1-888-204-6198.
Insurers may also access the NAIC's Producer Database ("PDB") to verify the issuance or renewal of a license. PDB is updated within 72 hours of a state's approval of the license application.
Questions about this bulletin may be directed to Jean E. Bienemann, Associate Commissioner of Producer Licensing, by e-mail at jbienemann@mdinsurance.state.md.us or by telephone at 410-468-2006. On behalf of the MIA, I want to thank you for your patience as we work to improve our service to producers.
