Secretary of State Duties. The Secretary of State is an officer of the executive branch of
state government elected by the people pursuant to Article 5, Section 133 of the Mississippi
Constitution. The Secretary of State is the keeper of the Capitol, registrar of all official acts of
the Governor and performs other duties as required by various statutes. There are specific
statutory duties in the following general areas: elections, public lands, business, regulation,
charities, securities, and publications.
