In riding a race, a jockey must be neat in appearance. All riders must be dressed in clean jockey costume, cap, breeches, and top boots. In all races, jockeys must wear safety helmets and safety vests. A safety vest may weigh no more than two pounds and must be designed to provide shock-absorbing protection to the upper body of at least a rating of five, as defined by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) in "BETA Specification for Body Protectors for Equestrian Use," Second Edition, June 1992. The weight of the helmets and vests may not be included in the jockey's weight.
