1704-02 Quarries, N.O.C. Applies to: Businesses engaged in quarrying to extract large solid rock from hillsides or open pits, not covered by another classification (N.O.C.). Rocks extracted include, but are not limited to: • Ballast rock; • Cement rock; • Coral rock; • Granite; • Limestone; • Marble; • Sandstone; • Shale rock; • Slate. Work processes include, but are not limited to: • Exposing rock with use of drag lines, power shovels, scrapers, or other earth moving equipment; • Blasting large rock masses with explosives to break portions loose; • Separating the rock into large blocks, sometimes called loafs; • Cutting a loaf using line drilling, wire sawing, diamond wire sawing, or chiseling methods; • Removing loafs from the quarry pit and taking them to the surface; • All other activities on the surface of the quarry site, which could involve further cutting of the loafs or crushing of rock into smaller pieces. Exclusions: • Open pit mining operations are classified in 1703; • Underground mining is classified in 1702.
