(1) You must make sure ramps and walkways are not inclined at a slope steeper than one vertical in three horizontal (1:3 or twenty degrees from the horizontal). (2) You must make sure ramps and walkways that are inclined at a slope steeper than one vertical in eight horizontal (1:8) have cleats to provide footing which are: (a) Securely fastened to the planks; and (b) Spaced not more than fourteen inches (35 cm) apart. Reference: Ramps and walkways that are four feet (1.2 m) or more above a lower level need to have a guardrail system. Those requirements are found in other chapters. 1. For general industry activities, go to working surfaces, guarding floors and wall openings, Part J-1, in the general safety and health standards, chapter 296-24 WAC; 2. For construction activities, go to floor openings, wall openings, and stairways, Parts C-1 and J, in the safety standards for construction work, chapter 296-155 WAC.
