Access ladders shall be installed in elevator pits 914.4 mm (36 in.) or deeper. Where constraints prohibit the installation of a pit ladder conforming to ASME A17.1/CSA B44, 2.2.4.2, a retractable ladder shall be permitted to be installed in accordance with 2.2.4.2.7 and 2.2.4.2.8 of ASME A17.1/CSA B44.
