SEC. 220. SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETIC ENERGY STORAGE PROJECT. (a) Project Office.—The Secretary of Defense shall establish or designate an office within the Department of Defense to have responsibility for the Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage Project. The project shall be carried out in coordination with the Secretary of Energy. (b) Plan.—(1) The Secretary of Defense shall develop a plan for the project. The plan shall be developed in cooperation with the Secretary of Energy and shall include provisions for sharing of the costs of the project by each Department. (2) The plan shall be designed so as to lead to the demonstration of an engineering test model of the superconducting magnetic storage system. (3) The plan shall be submitted to the Congress not later than April 1, 1992. (c) Funding for Fiscal Year 1992.—Of the amounts authorized to be appropriated pursuant to section 201 for fiscal year 1992, $20,000,000 shall be available to conduct planning and initial design activities for the project.
