retirement of career ambassadors Sec. 518. Section 631 and the heading thereto of such Act are amended to read as follows: “foreign service officers who are career ambassadors “Sec. 631. Any Foreign Service officer who is a career ambassador, other than one occupying a position as chief of mission or any other position to which appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, shall be retired from the Service at the end of the month in which the officer reaches age sixty-five and receive retirement benefits in accordance with the provisions of section 821, but whenever the Secretary shall determine it to be in the public interest, such an officer may be retained on active service for a period90 STAT. 846 not to exceed five years. Any such officer who completes a period of authorized service after reaching age sixty-five shall be retired at the end of the month in which such service is completed.”.
