SEC. 352. REPORT ON THE USE OF DEGRADABLE PLASTIC ITEMS BY DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE (a) Study.—The Secretary of Defense shall conduct a study of the use of disposable plastic items by the Department of Defense during fiscal year 1989 in order to identify the types of such items used by the Department of Defense and to determine the approximate quantity of those items used annually by the Department of Defense and to identify which of those items are degradable and which are not degradable. (b) Report.—Not later than March 1, 1990, the Secretary shall submit to the Committees on Armed Services of the Senate and House of Representatives a report on the results of the study required by subsection (a). The report shall include— (1) recommendations of the Secretary concerning the feasibility of substituting degradable plastic items for nondegradable plastic items identified in the study that are needed by the Department of Defense; and (2) a description of— 102 STAT. 1963 (A) the availability of degradable plastic items that are suitable substitutes for the nondegradable plastic items identified; and (B) any additional cost to the United States that would result from conversion to the use of such degradable plastic items over the cost of continued use of the nondegradable plastic items.
