SEC. 202. AMOUNT FOR BASIC AND APPLIED RESEARCH. (a) Fiscal Year 2002.—Of the amounts authorized to be appropriated by section 201, $5,070,605,000 shall be available for basic research and applied research projects. (b) Basic Research and Applied Research Defined.—For purposes of this section, the term “basic research and applied research” means work funded in program elements for defense research and development under Department of Defense category 6.1 or 6.2.
