SEC. 722. STUDY ON OPIOID ALTERNATIVES. (a) Establishment.—Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall carry out a study in military treatment facilities on the efficacy of opioid alternatives for pain management. (b) Report.—Not later than one year after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall submit to the Committees on Armed Services of the Senate and House of Representatives a report on the results of the study under this section. Such report shall include recommendations of the Secretary regarding the use of opioid alternatives in military treatment facilities. (c) Opioid Alternative Defined.—In this section, the term “opioid alternative” includes the following: (1) Cryotherapy. (2) Hyperbaric oxygen therapy. (3) Sensory deprivation.
