Requirements for Use of Diagnostic X-Ray Systems in the Healing Arts of
Medicine, Podiatry and Chiropractic
a) Viewing System. Windows, mirrors, closed circuit television
or an equivalent system shall be provided to permit the operator to
continuously observe the patient during irradiation.
b) The operator shall be able to maintain aural contact with the
patient.
c) Each x-ray control shall be located in such a way as to meet
the following requirements:
1) Stationary x-ray systems and mobile or portable x-ray systems
used as stationary x-ray systems shall be required to have the x-ray exposure
switch permanently mounted behind a protective barrier.
2) For mobile and portable single event exposures and
configuration, the x-ray control shall be positioned so that the operator is at
least 1.83 meters (6 feet) away from the tube housing and the patient during an
exposure.
3) Stationary podiatric x-ray systems are exempt from the
requirements of subsection (c)(1) of this Section, provided that the x-ray
control meets the requirements of subsection (c)(2) of this Section.
d) Portable or mobile x-ray equipment shall be used only for
examinations where it is impractical to transfer the patient(s) to a stationary
x-ray installation.
