Some parts of the state of New Mexico faced tornadoes and severe thunderstorms beginning on May 24, 2023 and lasting over the course of the next several days. On June 1, 2023, the Superintendent of Insurance issued Bulletin No. 2023-014, requiring insurance companies to report specific claims data related to those natural disaster events. The data reported pursuant to that Bulletin shows the following for Curry and Quay Counties: Claims Incurred Loss 2022 Population Claims as % of Population Curry 3957 47,085,365 47,532 8.3% Quay 422 3,610,794 8,546 4.9% B U L L E T I N 2 0 2 3 - 0 1 6 P a g e | 2 Main Office: 1120 Paseo de Peralta, Fourth Floor, Santa Fe, NM 87501 Satellite Office: 6200 Uptown Blvd NE, Suite 400, Albuquerque, NM 87110 Main Phone: (505) 827-4601 | Toll Free: (855) 4 - ASK - OSI www.osi.state.nm.us The foregoing data shows that in each of these counties, the natural disaster events directly affected more than 3% of the population and that claims of more $2.5 million have been submitted. Therefore, pursuant to 13.7.4.7(A)(1) NMAC, the Superintendent hereby declares a catastrophe to have occurred in Curry and Quay Counties during the 7-day period of 5/24/2023 through 5/30/2023. The catastrophic claim number is NM-2023-1. Pursuant to NMSA 1978, § 59A-16-20(F), insurers must settle all catastrophic claims within 90 days of the date of this Bulletin. Pursuant to 13.7.4.7(B) NMAC, a catastrophic claim means a property insurance claim or a vehicle physical damage insurance claim directly resulting from the catastrophe declared in this Bulletin.
