MD Insurance Bulletin 06-08
New Procedures for Requesting Letters of Certification
BULLETIN 06–08
DATE:

TO:
Insurers and Producers
RE:
New Procedure for Requesting Letters of Certification
The purpose of this Bulletin is to notify non-resident insurance producers and insurers that
Maryland, like all other states, no longer requires paper Letters of Certification to confirm the
status of a producer’s license. Instead, Maryland relies on the state producer licensing database
(SPLD) of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) to confirm the status of
producer licenses. Despite this national change, the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA)
continues to receive requests for paper Letters of Certification from licensees. As an
accommodation to these licensees, the MIA provides online requests for Letters of Certification
that can be printed from its website at: www.mdinsurance.state.md.us Click on: MIA ON-LINE
SERVICES>>LETTERS OF CERTIFICATION.
Effective immediately, the MIA will no longer produce paper Letters of Certification.
If an insurer requires printed documentation of a producer’s license status, the NAIC Producer
Database is available for the insurer’s use.
